![]() Futurescapes is hosting its 2017 writing contest for short stories in the sci-fi genre with the theme "Blue Sky Cities." They want stories (8,000 words or less) with a plot set in a near-future city where people have made vast improvements on air quality, climate adaptations, or other positive impacts on climate, weather, and environment. They do not want an unrealistic utopia, but would like to see dynamic stories with strong voices, characters that are realistic, and imagination used to overcome serious obstacles faced by the characters in this new city even though some of the climate aspects of the world have improved. The key is to show a solution is possible to today's problems in a manner consistent with politically charged atmosphere, scientific principles, economics, and everyday obstacles and emotions faced by average people including unintended consequences of even the best solutions. For more information, check out their website: Futurescapes Writing Contest. Grand Prize winner receives: $2,000. 5 Runners-Up will receive: $500 Deadline ends October 13, 2017
